Job Role: Head of Education & Quality
Location: HMP Wormwood Scrubs
Salary: £45,000 per annum + £5,000 London Weighting
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
  
Role Overview
We are recruiting an experienced and inspirational Head of Education & Quality to lead and develop education provision within a custodial environment at HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an ambitious education professional who is passionate about using learning as a vehicle for rehabilitation, progression and positive social impact.
As Head of Education & Quality, you will be responsible for driving excellence across curriculum delivery, quality improvement, learner outcomes and operational performance. You will lead a team of education professionals, ensuring learners receive high-quality teaching, learning and support that helps them develop the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and successful reintegration into society.
This role offers the opportunity to shape education strategy, influence continuous improvement and play a key role in reducing reoffending through education.
  
Key Responsibilities
  
Strategic Leadership
· Lead the development and implementation of the education strategy across the prison.
· Promote a culture of excellence, accountability and continuous improvement.
· Ensure education provision supports rehabilitation, employability and personal development outcomes.
· Drive innovation in teaching, learning and curriculum delivery.
· Lead curriculum planning to meet the needs of learners, employers and stakeholders.
  
Curriculum & Operational Management
· Oversee the day-to-day management of all education provision.
· Ensure effective staffing structures, curriculum planning and resource allocation.
· Monitor performance against contractual KPIs and operational targets.
· Manage and optimise departmental budgets and resources.
· Support the development of new curriculum pathways and opportunities.
  
Quality Improvement & Teaching Excellence
· Lead on Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment (QTLA).
· Implement robust quality assurance systems and improvement frameworks.
· Conduct observations, learning walks and quality reviews.
· Monitor learner achievement, attendance, retention and progression data.
· Lead Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) processes.
· Drive continuous improvement in learner outcomes and quality standards.
  
Leadership & People Development
· Lead, motivate and develop teaching, training and support staff.
· Deliver effective performance management, supervision and appraisal processes.
· Identify and support staff development and CPD opportunities.
· Promote a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture.
· Support succession planning and talent development across the education team.
  
Stakeholder & Partnership Management
· Build and maintain effective relationships with:
o Prison Leadership Teams
o Awarding Organisations
o Employers
o Community Partners
o External Stakeholders
· Represent the education provision during inspections, audits and reviews.
· Promote collaborative working that supports positive learner outcomes.
· Drive employer engagement and progression opportunities where appropriate.
  
Safeguarding, Compliance & Inspection Readiness
· Ensure compliance with all safeguarding, prison security and regulatory requirements.
· Lead preparation for Ofsted inspections, audits and external reviews.
· Ensure provision meets contractual, awarding organisation and quality standards.
· Promote equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the education provision.
· Support robust risk management and governance processes.
  
Essential Criteria
· Degree-level qualification and/or relevant professional qualification.
· Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, QTLS or equivalent).
· Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to achieve.
· Significant leadership experience within education, training or skills provision.
· Proven experience managing curriculum development and quality improvement initiatives.
· Experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
· Strong understanding of quality assurance systems and educational performance management.
· Knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
· Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
· Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and learner success.
  
Desirable Criteria
· Experience within prison education, further education or adult learning environments.
· Experience working with disadvantaged or vulnerable learners.
· Experience leading education services through Ofsted inspection.
· Knowledge of current education, skills and employability initiatives.
· Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams across diverse curriculum areas.
