Job Role: Adult Learning Tutor
ESOL | English | Maths | Digital Skills | Family Learning
Location: Croydon & Merton
Flexibility to deliver across community venues throughout South London as required.
Salary: £30,000 – £33,000 per annum
Salary dependent upon qualifications, teaching experience and sector expertise.
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
 
Role Overview
We are recruiting an enthusiastic and learner-focused Adult Learning Tutor to deliver high-quality adult and family learning programmes across Croydon and Merton.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced tutor who is passionate about helping adults and families develop essential skills, improve confidence and progress towards further learning, volunteering and employment opportunities.
As an Adult Learning Tutor, you will deliver engaging and inclusive learning programmes across areas such as ESOL, English, Maths, Digital Skills and Family Learning, helping learners build confidence, independence and practical life skills. You will support diverse communities, remove barriers to participation and create positive learning experiences that improve outcomes for individuals and families.
Working within community settings, you will play a key role in promoting social inclusion, wellbeing, employability and lifelong learning.
 
Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Delivery

  • Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and differentiated adult and family learning programmes.
  • Deliver learning across English, Maths, Digital Skills, ESOL and related family learning provision.
  • Create learner-centred sessions that promote participation, confidence and achievement.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to support mixed abilities, additional learning needs and language barriers.
  • Develop learners’ practical skills and confidence for everyday life, further learning and employment.
  • Promote independent learning, resilience and positive progression.

Assessment & Learner Progression

  • Assess learner starting points and identify support needs.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Agree meaningful learner targets and monitor progress regularly.
  • Evidence learner achievement, progression and distance travelled.
  • Provide high-quality feedback, guidance and developmental support.
  • Support progression into further education, volunteering and employment.

  • Support learners to apply skills confidently in everyday, educational and workplace settings.

  • Support learners to understand progression pathways and future opportunities.
  • Promote learner wellbeing and positive participation.
  • Support learners to access wider community opportunities and services.
  • Create learning experiences that enhance confidence, aspirations and independence.

 
Safeguarding, Quality & Compliance

  • Promote a strong safeguarding culture and follow all safeguarding procedures.
  • Maintain accurate learner records, attendance data and assessment documentation.
  • Participate in observations, standardisation, moderation and quality assurance activities.
  • Comply with safeguarding, Prevent, health and safety, equality and GDPR requirements.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement activity.

 
Essential Criteria

  • Experience planning and delivering high-quality teaching, learning and assessment to adults and/or families.
  • Experience delivering in one or more of the following areas:
    • ESOL
    • English
    • Maths
    • Digital Skills
    • Family Learning
  • Strong understanding of learner assessment, differentiation and progression.
  • Experience embedding English, Maths, Digital Skills and Employability Skills.
  • Experience supporting learners with diverse needs and barriers to participation.
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and the Prevent duty.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and learner engagement skills.
  • Strong digital skills and experience using online learning platforms.
  • Level 3 teaching qualification (AET or equivalent).
  • Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

 
Desirable Criteria

  • Experience delivering Adult Skills Fund (ASF) provision or other publicly funded programmes.
  • Experience delivering careers education, information, advice and guidance.
  • Subject-specialist qualification in:
    • ESOL
    • English
    • Maths
    • Digital Skills
    • Family Learning
  • Assessor qualification (TAQA, CAVA or equivalent).
  • Information, Advice & Guidance qualification.
  • Experience participating in quality assurance, moderation or observation processes.
  • Knowledge of local communities across South London.

 
Recruitment Process
The recruitment process will include:

  • Initial screening and competency-based interview
  • Attendance at an Assessment Day currently scheduled for 15th October 2026
  • Delivery of a short Micro Teach session

Shortlisted candidates will receive a full briefing pack, including Micro Teach guidance and assessment criteria, prior to interview.
