Job Role: Construction Skills Tutor
Location: HMP Onley
Salary: From £30,000 per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Role Overview:
We are recruiting an experienced and motivated Construction Skills Tutor to deliver high-quality vocational training within a custodial education setting at HMP Onley.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Construction Professional, Site Supervisor, Tradesperson, Construction Trainer or Vocational Tutor looking to use their industry knowledge to positively impact the lives of others.
Working with small groups of prison-based learners, you will deliver engaging construction-based training, helping individuals develop practical trade skills, industry knowledge and workplace behaviours that support future employment opportunities. You will play a key role in building learner confidence, developing employability skills and supporting successful rehabilitation through education.
Whether you are already working in education or looking to transition from the construction industry into training, support can be provided to gain teaching and assessing qualifications where required.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching, Learning & Delivery
- Deliver engaging vocational construction training to adult learners.
- Plan and deliver practical sessions that meet curriculum and qualification requirements.
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
- Create a positive, inclusive and motivating learning environment.
- Develop learners’ practical construction skills and employability behaviours.
- Promote safe working practices and industry standards at all times.
Learner Support & Progression
- Conduct initial and ongoing assessments to support learner development.
- Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Provide constructive feedback, advice and guidance to support achievement.
- Support learners to gain qualifications and progress towards employment.
- Build learner confidence, resilience and motivation.
- Help learners identify realistic career pathways within the construction sector.
Quality, Compliance & Administration
- Maintain accurate learner records and assessment documentation.
- Ensure delivery meets awarding body, contractual and quality requirements.
- Support quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Work collaboratively with prison staff, education colleagues and support services.
Industry & Employability Development
- Embed employability, health and safety and professional behaviours into delivery.
- Ensure training reflects current construction industry practices and expectations.
- Support learners to understand employer requirements and workplace standards.
- Promote progression into construction careers, apprenticeships and further training opportunities.
Essential Criteria:
- Level 2 or Level 3 vocational qualification within the Construction industry.
- GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths.
- Significant occupational experience within the Construction sector.
- Strong knowledge of construction practices, health & safety and industry standards.
- Excellent communication and learner engagement skills.
- Ability to motivate and support learners from a variety of backgrounds.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
Desirable Criteria:
- Teaching qualification (AET, PTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE or equivalent).
- Assessor qualification (TAQA, CAVA or equivalent).
- Experience delivering vocational training or apprenticeships.
- Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education.
- Experience mentoring, coaching or developing others within a construction environment.
No Teaching Qualification? No Problem.
