Job Role: Employment Retention Practitioner
Location: Remote-based (UK, with occasional travel to London)
Salary: £31,623 – £43,335
Contract: Permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm)
 
Role Overview
We are recruiting an experienced and credible Employment Retention Practitioner to support participants on the Work Well programme. This programme is designed to help individuals remain in work, return to work, or move into sustainable employment where physical or mental health and workplace relationships are key factors.
As an Employment Retention Practitioner, you will work with people who are currently employed but at risk of falling out of work due to health, workplace or employment relations challenges, as well as those who have recently left employment and require support to return. You will provide tailored, one-to-one support and work closely with employers, HR teams, clinical services, GP practices and partner organisations to achieve positive employment retention outcomes.
You will operate as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), collaborating with Mental Health Practitioners and Occupational Therapy Practitioners, and using your strong understanding of employment law and workplace practice to inform balanced, practical decisions.
 
Key Responsibilities
Participant Engagement & Assessment

  • Act as the dedicated Employment Retention Practitioner for a defined caseload of participants
  • Build strong, professional relationships with participants
  • Conduct holistic assessments to identify health conditions, employment history, workplace risks and barriers
  • Co-produce personalised Health and Work Action Plans with participants
  • Use coaching and motivational techniques to build confidence and engagement

Employment Retention & Return-to-Work Support

  • Support participants to:
    • Remain in work
    • Return to work following sickness absence
    • Move into alternative suitable employment where required
  • Provide practical advice on managing health conditions and employment issues in the workplace
  • Deliver employment coaching, including:
    • CV updates
    • Career planning
    • Job search support where appropriate
  • Identify and coordinate appropriate interventions, training or specialist referrals

Employer Engagement & Workplace Adjustments

  • Work directly with employers and HR contacts to:
    • Provide guidance on reasonable adjustments
    • Support workplace accommodations
    • Navigate employment relations challenges
  • Mediate between employers and employees to agree sustainable solutions
  • Promote early intervention to prevent job loss
  • Balance participant advocacy with employer obligations and legal considerations

Multi-Disciplinary & Partnership Working

  • Work collaboratively with:
    • Mental Health Practitioners
    • Occupational Therapy Practitioners
    • Wider MDT colleagues
  • Contribute to shared decision-making informed by employment law and best practice
  • Build and maintain strong referral relationships with:
    • GP practices
    • Community health teams
    • External specialist providers
  • Proactively promote the service to employers and stakeholders to support engagement targets

Administration, Targets & Quality

  • Maintain accurate, timely and compliant participant records
  • Ensure all activity meets:
    • Programme requirements
    • Safeguarding standards
    • Data protection and information security expectations
  • Work toward performance and outcome targets expected of an Employment Retention Practitioner
  • Support audits, quality checks and continuous improvement activity

 
Essential Criteria

  • Proven experience supporting individuals with health-related and/or employment barriers
  • Strong and demonstrable understanding of employment law, HR or employment relations, ideally gained within:
    • Advisory services
    • HR or ER functions
    • Trade union, legal or conciliation environments (e.g. ACAS or similar)
  • Solid understanding of the impact of physical and mental health conditions on work
  • Confidence advising on reasonable adjustments and workplace best practice
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload as an Employment Retention Practitioner
  • Experience working in a target-driven or outcomes-focused environment
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confident using IT systems, Microsoft Office and case management tools
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload effectively
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, including to London

 
Desirable Criteria

  • Vocational Rehabilitation qualification or equivalent
  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience
  • Coaching qualification or coaching experience
  • Experience working within health, wellbeing or integrated employment services
  • Experience supporting the delivery or mobilisation of new programmes

 
Safeguarding

  • Enhanced DBS check (adults and children) required due to access to sensitive and NHS patient data
  • Ongoing compliance with safeguarding, data protection, health and safety and information security policies
