Job Role: ESOL Tutor (Adult Skills & Community Learning)
Location: Croydon & Merton
Flexibility to deliver across multiple community venues and neighbouring locations as required.
Salary: £30,000 – £33,000 per annum
Salary will be dependent upon qualifications, teaching experience and sector expertise.
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
 
Role Overview
We are recruiting an engaging and learner-focused ESOL Tutor to deliver high-quality English language provision to adult learners across Croydon and Merton.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ESOL professional who is passionate about community learning, social inclusion and helping learners gain the language skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment, further education and everyday life.
Working across a range of community venues, you will support learners from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, delivering engaging, practical and learner-centred ESOL provision that creates genuine opportunities and positive outcomes.
You will play a key role in helping learners develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills while supporting progression into employment, training, volunteering and wider community participation.
 
Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Delivery

  • Plan and deliver high-quality ESOL programmes for adult learners.
  • Develop learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills through practical and real-life learning contexts.
  • Create engaging, inclusive and differentiated learning experiences.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to support learners with varying language levels, literacy skills and educational backgrounds.
  • Deliver learner-centred sessions that promote confidence, independence and progression.
  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages participation and achievement.

Assessment & Learner Progression

  • Assess learner starting points and identify individual needs.
  • Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Set realistic and meaningful learner targets.
  • Monitor progress through ongoing assessment and review.
  • Evidence learner achievement, progress and distance travelled.
  • Support progression into further learning, employment, volunteering and vocational training opportunities.

Embedding Skills & Employability

  • Embed digital skills into ESOL delivery.
  • Promote employability and life skills throughout programmes.
  • Support learners to use English effectively in community, educational and workplace settings.
  • Deliver careers education, information, advice and guidance relevant to learner aspirations.
  • Support learners to understand progression routes and next steps.

Learner Support & Wellbeing

  • Support learners from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Adapt learning materials for learners with SEND, additional needs and barriers to participation.
  • Promote learner wellbeing, confidence and resilience.
  • Signpost learners to appropriate support services where required.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment.

Safeguarding, Quality & Compliance

  • Promote a strong safeguarding culture and follow safeguarding procedures appropriately.
  • Maintain accurate learner records, attendance data and assessment documentation.
  • Participate in observations, standardisation, moderation and quality assurance activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and curriculum development.
  • Comply with funding, quality, safeguarding, Prevent, data protection and equality requirements.

 
Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable experience delivering high-quality ESOL teaching, learning and assessment to adult learners.
  • Experience supporting learners to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
  • Strong understanding of ESOL assessment, differentiation and learner progression.
  • Experience working with learners from diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusive practice.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and learner engagement skills.
  • Strong digital literacy and administration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues and community partners.
  • Level 3 teaching qualification (AET or equivalent).
  • Relevant ESOL qualification or active study towards one.
  • Level 2 English and Maths (or equivalent).

 
Desirable Criteria

  • Experience delivering Adult Skills Fund (ASF) or other publicly funded adult learning programmes.
  • Experience supporting progression into employment, volunteering or further education.
  • Experience delivering careers education, information, advice and guidance.
  • Experience participating in quality assurance, observation and moderation activities.
  • Subject specialist qualifications in ESOL, English, Maths or Digital Skills.
  • Information, Advice & Guidance qualification.
  • Assessor qualification or willingness to work towards one.
  • Knowledge of local communities and labour market opportunities across South London.

 
 
Recruitment Process
The recruitment process will include:

  • Initial screening and competency-based interview.
  • Attendance at an Assessment Day, currently scheduled for 15th October 2026.
  • Delivery of a short Micro Teach session as part of the assessment process.

Shortlisted candidates will receive a full briefing pack, including Micro Teach guidance and assessment criteria, prior to interview.
