Role Overview
We are recruiting an enthusiastic and inspiring Functional Skills English Tutor to join the education team at HMP & YOI Chelmsford.
This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate English Teacher, English Tutor, Functional Skills Tutor or Adult Education Professional looking to use their skills to make a genuine difference to people’s lives.
As a Functional Skills English Tutor, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2, helping learners develop the literacy, communication and employability skills needed to progress into further education, vocational training and sustainable employment.
Working with small groups of learners, you will create engaging and inclusive learning experiences that build confidence, improve achievement and support rehabilitation through education.

Key Responsibilities
  
Teaching, Learning & Delivery
· Deliver Functional Skills English qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
· Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and learner-focused lessons.
· Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learner needs and abilities.
· Create a positive, supportive and motivating learning environment.
· Use innovative teaching approaches and learning technologies to encourage engagement.
· Promote literacy, communication and employability skills throughout delivery.
  
Assessment & Learner Progression
· Conduct initial assessments and utilise BKSB diagnostics to establish learner starting points.
· Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
· Monitor learner progress and achievement against agreed targets.
· Prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
· Provide constructive feedback and developmental support.
· Implement reasonable adjustments to support learner success where required.
  
Learner Support & Development
· Support learners with additional learning needs and barriers to education.
· Build learner confidence, resilience and self-belief.
· Promote reading, literacy and independent learning.
· Encourage learners to achieve personal, educational and career aspirations.
· Support progression into further learning, vocational training and employment opportunities.
  
Quality, Compliance & Partnership Working
· Maintain accurate learner records, assessments and documentation.
· Ensure delivery meets awarding body, contractual and quality assurance requirements.
· Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times.
· Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams.
· Contribute to quality improvement and continuous development initiatives.
  
Essential Criteria
· Level 3 qualification in English or equivalent.
· Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
· Experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications.
· Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
· Ability to differentiate learning to meet diverse learner needs.
· Excellent communication, organisation and administration skills.
· Experience monitoring learner progress and maintaining accurate records.
· Commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success.
  
Desirable Criteria
· Experience within prison education, further education or adult learning.
· Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools.
· Knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
· Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards.
· Experience supporting learners with additional learning needs.
· Experience delivering City & Guilds qualifications.
