Role Overview:
We are recruiting an enthusiastic and inspiring Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join the education team at HMP Nottingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate Maths Teacher, Functional Skills Tutor, Numeracy Tutor or Adult Education Professional looking to use their skills to make a genuine difference to people’s lives.
As a Functional Skills Maths Tutor, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Level 1 to Level 2, helping learners develop the numeracy, problem-solving and employability skills needed to progress into further education, vocational training and sustainable employment.
Working with small groups of learners, you will create engaging and inclusive learning experiences that build confidence, improve achievement and support rehabilitation through education.

Key Responsibilities:
Teaching, Learning & Delivery
- Deliver Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Level 1 to Level 2.
- Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and learner-focused lessons.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learner needs and abilities.
- Create a positive, supportive and motivating learning environment.
- Use innovative teaching approaches, learning technologies and practical examples to maximise learner engagement.
- Embed employability, problem-solving and workplace numeracy skills throughout delivery.
Assessment & Learner Progression
- Conduct initial assessments and utilise BKSB diagnostics to establish learner starting points.
- Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Monitor learner progress and achievement against agreed targets.
- Prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
- Provide constructive feedback and developmental support.
- Implement reasonable adjustments to support learner success where required.
Learner Support & Development
- Support learners with additional learning needs and barriers to education.
- Build learner confidence, resilience and self-belief.
- Promote numeracy, critical thinking and independent learning.
- Encourage learners to achieve personal, educational and career aspirations.
- Support progression into further learning, vocational training and employment opportunities.
Quality, Compliance & Partnership Working
- Maintain accurate learner records, assessments and documentation.
- Ensure delivery meets awarding body, contractual and quality assurance requirements.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times.
- Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams.
- Contribute to quality improvement and continuous development initiatives.
Essential Criteria:
- Level 3 qualification in Mathematics or equivalent.
- Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths qualifications.
- Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
- Ability to differentiate learning to meet diverse learner needs.
- Excellent communication, organisation and administrative skills.
- Experience monitoring learner progress and maintaining accurate records.
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience within prison education, further education or adult learning.
- Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools.
- Knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
- Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards.
- Experience supporting learners with additional learning needs.
- Experience delivering City & Guilds qualifications.
