Job Role: Observation Assessor – Health & Social Care
Location: South West England (Covering Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Brighton and surrounding areas)
Salary: up to £37,800+ OTE
Structure:
- £33,000 Basic
- £400 per month bonus upon achieving 40 observations per month
- Additional £10 paid for every observation completed above the 40-target threshold
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:45am – 4:45pm
Please Note: Due to the nature of this role, a full UK drivers license & access to own vehicle is required
Role Overview
We are recruiting an experienced Observation Assessor – Health & Social Care to support apprenticeship delivery across the South West region.
This is a field-based role focused on conducting high-quality workplace observations for learners undertaking Health & Social Care qualifications delivered through City & Guilds.
Working closely with the Performance Development Managers (PDMs), you will provide specialist observation support, helping learners generate the evidence required to successfully progress through their apprenticeship programmes.
Unlike traditional assessor roles, this position carries no learner caseload responsibility, allowing you to focus entirely on workplace observations, learner progression and quality assurance activities.
This role is ideal for an experienced Health & Social Care professional who enjoys travelling, working autonomously, and supporting learners to achieve their qualifications through high-quality assessment practice.
Key Responsibilities
Observation & Assessment Delivery
- Conduct planned workplace observations for learners undertaking Health & Social Care qualifications up to Level 5
- Travel extensively across the South West region to complete face-to-face observations
- Work closely alongside Performance Development Managers to support learner progression
- Observe learner practice against qualification standards and assessment requirements
- Gather high-quality evidence to support achievement of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs)
- Provide detailed, constructive and developmental feedback following observations
- Ensure observations are completed in line with learner development plans and qualification timelines
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure all observations meet awarding organisation and qualification requirements
- Maintain high standards of quality, consistency and compliance
- Complete observation reports and associated administration within required timescales
- Contribute to quality assurance activities and continuous improvement initiatives
- Support standardisation and sharing of best practice across the wider team
Learner & Employer Engagement
- Liaise with employers and learners to arrange and coordinate observations
- Build positive relationships with workplace stakeholders
- Support learners to understand feedback and developmental actions
- Promote a positive learner experience throughout the apprenticeship journey
Additional Assessment Support
Support additional learner interventions where required, including:
- Professional Discussions
- Mock assessments
- Preparation for End Point Assessment
- Collection of supplementary evidence
- Work collaboratively with operational, quality and support teams to maximise learner success
Essential Criteria
- Level 5 qualification in Health & Social Care
Assessor qualification such as:
- TAQA
- CAVA
- A1
- D32/D33
- Or equivalent
- Minimum two years’ occupational experience within Health & Social Care at Senior Carer level or above
- Experience conducting workplace observations and assessment activities
- Previous apprenticeship assessment experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organisational and time-management ability
- Comfortable travelling extensively throughout the South West region
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working with City & Guilds qualifications
- Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification
- Experience supporting apprenticeship standards and End Point Assessment preparation
- Knowledge of apprenticeship funding and quality requirements

- Mileage paid at 38p per mile
